"We highly recommend Lilac HVAC. They fixed three previously installed units that were incorrectly linked at our business premises. Very professional and knowledgeable."

The Workhorse on the Roof, Running When It Matters

A packaged unit puts the whole air conditioning system in one cabinet, usually on the roof or a slab beside the building, ducting conditioned air straight into the space below. It’s the workhorse of Central Coast shops, offices, medical suites, clubs, and light industrial units, and when it stops, so does trade.

Lilac HVAC supplies, installs, replaces, repairs, and maintains packaged units across the Coast. Where the existing ductwork and roof penetrations are sound, a like-for-like changeover is often the cleanest fix: old unit off, new unit on, minimal disruption to the building.

One local contractor for the unit on the roof and everything it connects to.

Packaged Unit Services We Handle

Ageing rooftop and slab-mounted units replaced like-for-like where the ductwork is sound, sized properly for the space rather than just matching the old nameplate.

Packaged units specified and installed for new fit-outs, extensions, and buildings moving off failed or obsolete systems.

Units that trip, short-cycle, lose airflow, or stop dead, diagnosed at the cause and fixed properly.

Coils, filters, belts, drains, and controls checked on a three-to-six-month cycle, with a written report for commercial and strata records.

Signs Your Packaged Unit Is on Borrowed Time

The unit is 15 to 20 years old, or nobody remembers when it went in

check icon

It runs on R22 refrigerant, which has been phased out in Australia and is now costly or impossible to source

check icon

Power bills climbing while the space gets harder to keep comfortable

check icon

Breakdowns arriving closer together, each repair dearer than the last

Tripping, short-cycling, or airflow that keeps dropping off

Rust, corrosion, or water where it shouldn't be, especially near the coast

An old packaged unit rarely fails on a mild day. It fails in January, with customers in the building. If yours is showing any of these signs, get it assessed before summer makes the decision for you.

Sized for the space, not the old nameplate.

Buildings change: new shopfronts, more equipment, different use. We check the current load before quoting a changeover, so you're not inheriting a 20-year-old sizing mistake.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a packaged air conditioning unit?

A packaged air conditioning unit houses the entire system, compressor, coils, and fans, in a single cabinet, usually mounted on the roof or on a slab beside the building, with ducts carrying conditioned air into the space. It suits shops, offices, clubs, and light industrial buildings that need reliable heating and cooling from one self-contained unit.

A split or ducted system separates the components: an outdoor compressor connected by refrigerant pipes to indoor units or a roof-space unit. A packaged unit puts everything in one cabinet outside the building, which simplifies servicing and frees up internal space. Packaged units are mostly a commercial choice; splits and ducted dominate homes.

Usually, yes. Where the existing ductwork and roof penetrations are sound, we replace the unit on the same footprint with minimal disruption to the building. We also check the space’s current load first, so the new unit is sized for how the building is used today.

R22 has been phased out in Australia, so regassing an R22 unit after a leak or repair is now expensive and often not possible at all. If your packaged unit runs on R22, plan its replacement on your timeline rather than waiting for a January breakdown to set it for you.

Around 15 to 20 years with regular maintenance, though coastal salt air can shorten that, particularly for units near the water. Condition matters more than age: we assess the unit and tell you straight whether repair or replacement is the smarter spend.

Every three to six months for most commercial sites, depending on run hours and the environment. Regular servicing keeps coils, filters, belts, and drains in order, protects the compressor, and gives commercial and strata managers a written record.

It depends on the unit’s capacity, roof access, and the state of the existing ductwork, so we quote each job individually after a site assessment. You get a fixed price before any work starts, and estimates are free on larger and more complex commercial sites.
